Boiling Lake &
Valley of Desolation

Come and experience an intense hike to the second largest boiling lake in the world. The Boiling Lake hike is one the most popular activities in Dominica. It is a 7 - 8 hour arduous round-trip adventure, which begins in the village of Laudat, passing through a wide range of vegetation and terrain, including the Valley of desolation with its many unique streams of gray, white and black. The temperature in the lake is over 200 degrees F. The boiling lake is located in the area and believed to be a flooded fumarole, a crack through which gases escape from the molten lava below, rather than a volcanic crater. The natural basin of the Boiling Lake collects the rainfall from the surrounding hills and from two small streams which empty into the lake. The water seeps through the porous bottom to the hot lava below where it is trapped and heated to boiling point.
