Shopping Shopping in Guyana is an adventure worth embarking upon as you discover unique treasures that are Guyana's claim to fame. The main shopping area in Georgetown runs from the bottom of Main Street, to the markets and along Regent Street where you can find handicrafts, jewelry, paintings, carvings and tibisiri (straw) furniture at bargain prices. The Amerindian Hostel, an Amerindian haven and central selling point in the city, is based on Princess Street and supplies excellent Amerindian craft, ceremonial pipes, furniture, cassava bread and cassareep (used in pepper pot). Other good buys include rum, sugar and sweetmeats, including guava jelly, tamarind balls and fudge. Also look for beaten brassware, leather, nibbee fiber and balata goods, pottery and local Amerindian handicrafts (especially cotton hammocks from Rupununi—not cheap). In addition, Guyana is known for wooden furniture—look for items made from purple and green heartwood, as well as wamara, a highly prized brown ebony. |
